J'ai couché au camping Hosmer groove (gratuit avec l'entré du parc) la veille afin de débuté assez tôt. The hike was amazing and was sunny for the first 7 miles. If you think you don’t want to spend much time hiking into the crater, then an alternative Haleakala hike can be the Pa Kaoao Trail. So much to see down there! -Several people were seen backpacking to the further east parts of the crater, I’d love to do that if I ever return. Be prepared for all types of terrain on this one.

Definitely not something I would ever want to do. Another tip we picked up from users here was to leave your car at the end you will be finishing at and hitchhike down to the other end of the trail.

Short Haleakala hike instead of Sliding Sands Trail. -Views are incredible, and starting in rocky/sandy lava desert and finishing in a jungle-ish setting was very cool Halemau‘u Trail: Hike 1.1 miles (1.8 km) on a rocky path to a crater viewpoint. If your group is larger than 12 you will need to split into two or more groups and separate each group by 30 minutes on the trail. It took us about 5.5 hours total and we only stopped for 15 minutes averaging just over 2 MPH. After eating lunch at the cabin’s picnic bench or sleeping within the cabin’s confines, you’ll resume your now northward track on the Halemau’u Trail as it approaches the northwestern wall of Haleakala Crater. Many people take day hikes down to a pit about two miles in and then ascend back out along the same trail.

The clouds did break for a while and we were able to take off our rain gear to dry out and warm up. Due to the fragile nature of Hawaiian ecosystems, it is required by law that hikers stay on marked trails. There was zero shade until we hiked through a cloud starting at mile 8.

The trail is primarily used for hiking, camping, nature trips, and backpacking.As of June 2020 (COVID 19 response) The summit area is now open for sunrise viewing and must be reserved on Lots of fun however we had a storm blow in which reduce visibility to about 10 feet and so becoming disoriented and hypothermic nearly became a reality. Did this on 10/12/19, started at 1pm to try to finish in time for sunset. Pets are prohibited on all trails.
